I write in support of the application by Bethany Hill and Jodie 0’Regan for a residency at Ukaria in 2018 to develop their project ReBirth.

Bethany Hill has a soprano voice of considerable versatility and range, and a charismatic stage presence. Bethany has taken part in several productions which I have produced and directed, most recently as Eurydice in a version of the Orpheus myth created for the Treasury Tunnels in central Adelaide, and in the French Soirée as part of the 2018 State Opera Emerging Artists program. She brings a keen curiosity and musical intellect to her work, and a desire to be the best she can be.

Bethany’s recent performances of music by Jodie O’Regan have had considerable success, in South Australia and interstate. Inspired by the upper register of Bethany’s voice, as well as by her compelling stage presence, Jodie has created works of imagination and beauty which explore aspects of the feminine experience.

I commend these artists as skilled musicians of integrity and conscience, with a considerable range of musical experience between them and a desire to explore the boundaries between genres and to find a new joint musical language. In an industry dominated by male composers, this project promises to contribute strongly to the feminine perspective within contemporary classical music.

To Whom It May Concern

I am writing in support of two very fine Adelaide musicians who aspire to being resident at the Ukaria Cultural Centre.

For some years now I've been a great admirer of Bethany Hill. Her Susanna for Co*Opera and her Dido in the Queen's Theatre were memorable for her vocal ability and dramatic power. Her recent performance as the soprano soloist with the Philharmonia Chorus under Aldis Sils of the Haydn Missa in Angustiis was powerful. I can't get it out of my head, and don't want to.

Jodie O'Regan and I have sung together, but I've always been aware of her commitment to composing for the voice. I have a recording of her oratorio 'Letters to a Queen' which I think I can describe as an early work. It is finely crafted and approachable music. More recently I've been impressed by her ability to compose songs and choral pieces that are both engaging and educational. Recent concerts of her work, especially pieces individually tailored to specific individuals have encouraged me to broach the subject of having her compose for me.

They have begun to work together which is a collaboration I heartily support. I've been to Ukaria for concerts, and have performed there in my own work 'The da Ponte Project: Making Mozart'.

It's an excellent environment for performances and would provide a stimulating environment for composition and collaboration. I'm sure it will spur the creation of new work and new opportunities for both these musicians.
