G’day!

I’m Jodie, the music composer who lives in the old Redruth Methodist Church with my husband Emlyn and our two grumpy little white dogs. In 2026 I’m going make a new classical piece of music with people who live here. Together we’ll make a piece that’s truly about Burra.

If you’re a musician, that’s great. If you’re not, that’s fine. Orchestra is a pretty loose term, we’ll just put it together based on who comes and what you want to do! If you defs don’t want to make music, there are other ways you can get involved.

I’ve written music before with groups of people, but a whole town is the biggest project I’ve ever done, so that’s pretty awesome.

Here’s the plan so far.

WRITING WORDS - March t0 April

I’ll put up boards around town where we can write and read each other’s stories. Then I’ll take everyone’s words, put them together and make lyrics.

What you can do

  • Host a board. Do you have a place that could host a board, somewhere people pass by, with a wall space? Somewhere you can keep an eye on to prevent vandalism?

  • Suggest another idea. Do you have another idea for collecting stories about life in Burra?

  • Write on a board. Tell your Burra story.

MUSIC WORKSHOPS - May t0 July

Then we’ll have some jamming workshops to come up with ideas for the music. I’d love to do a session/s with the kids at school, and another session with adults.

We’ll jam ideas for melodies and the instruments for our “Burra orchestra.”  The Men’s Shed have already started making some instruments. Maybe we could use other things like old farm gear, water tanks, or anything that makes an interesting sound.

Then I’ll take the ideas and make a full score.

What you can do

  • Get involved in a workshop. Everyone will be welcome. If you’re a muso, you can jam ideas. If you’re not a muso, come and listen.

  • Suggest ideas for instruments.

PREPARING AND PERFORMANCE - August to October

The plan is to perform with some visiting professional musicians who’ll be touring to Burra in October. They can join our orchestra.

What you can do

  • Let me know if you’d like to perform or help.

THANK YOU

I’m really excited to make our very own piece of classical music for our town! We’ve got good stories to tell.

This project is supported by NEOEN through their Community Benefit Fund. Thank you Neoen!
